Maintaining Federal Compliance & Pressure Vessel Safety

Transport Canada mandates a strict 10-year requalification cycle for portable propane cylinders. Refilling stations are legally prohibited from filling any cylinder that has passed its 10-year manufacture or recertification date stamp.

Stationary ASME bulk tanks follow a different set of provincial safety standards, requiring periodic visual checks and pressure relief valve servicing rather than a hard expiry date.

Ready Propane holds a specialty Transport Canada license to perform official cylinder requalification, visual inspections, volumetric expansion testing, and valve replacements — at our Parksville facility, and on-site for qualified commercial accounts. This keeps forklift fleets, agricultural operations, and property owners compliant with both federal transport regulations and provincial WorkSafeBC standards.

Transport Canada Standards vs. ASME Stationary Standards

Applicable Vessels

33# & 43# forklift cylinders, 100#, 200#, and 420# vertical cylinders.

500, 1,000, and 2,000+ US-gallon stationary horizontal bulk tanks.

Inspection Interval

Requalification required every 10 years from manufacture date or last stamp.

External visual inspection every 5 years; mandatory pressure relief valve replacement at 25 years.

Regulatory Impact

Expired cylinders cannot legally be transported or filled by any supplier.

Non-compliant tanks must be inspected or re-valved before fuel delivery can occur.

COMMERCIAL FORKLIFT FLEET REQUALIFICATION & ON-SITE FILLING

For warehouses, lumber yards, and industrial operations running propane forklifts, cylinder downtime costs real money. Ready Propane provides reliable on-site forklift cylinder refilling throughout mid-Vancouver Island, keeping your fleet fueled without unnecessary shop trips.

  • On-site cylinder refilling — Our bulk delivery trucks fill your 33 lb or 43 lb aluminum and steel forklift cylinders directly at your facility on a regular delivery schedule.
  • Delivery minimum — 4 cylinders on-site required to qualify for delivery service.
  • Shop repairs & requalification — If a cylinder requires TC requalification, valve replacement, or repairs, we transport it to our Parksville shop, service it, and return it to your site.
  • Recommended fleet rotation — Maintaining 5 to 6 cylinders per active forklift ensures multi-shift operations run continuously between bulk refilling visits.

Why Timely Cylinder requalification Matters

Staying ahead of your cylinder’s expiry date is less about paperwork and more about keeping your fuel supply uninterrupted. A cylinder that lapses can’t be refilled by us or any other supplier until it’s brought back into compliance, which means an unplanned gap in heat or equipment operation right when you need it most.

Avoid refusal at the pump

No supplier can legally fill an expired cylinder, so a lapsed date stamp means an immediate service interruption.

Protect your equipment

Cylinder requalification includes a full visual inspection, catching corrosion or valve wear before it becomes a safety issue.

Keep operations running

Forklift fleets and farm operations avoid costly downtime by recertifying on a planned schedule rather than reacting to an expired stamp.

Simplify compliance

One licensed provider handling inspection, requalification, and restamping on a planned schedule rather than reacting to an expired stamp means less coordinating between multiple vendors.

Preparing Cylinders for requalification

A propane cylinder requalification inspection requires complete depressurization and valve removal, so a bit of prep on your end keeps things moving smoothly:

  • Burn the cylinder completely dry — run attached equipment until the burner extinguishes fully, so there’s zero remaining internal liquid or vapor pressure
  • Switch to a backup cylinder — connect a secondary cylinder to your appliance before scheduling service, so your heat or gas supply isn’t interrupted
  • Schedule ahead — processing times vary by season, and winter emergency turnaround is limited, so spring or summer is the best time to book

Look at the top collar or ring of your vertical cylinder. Transport Canada stamps show the manufacture date (e.g., “05 A 16” means May 2016). Your cylinder expires on the last day of that month, 10 years later.

Full details on cylinder markings and expiry rules are available from Transport Canada.
